Linux on Vista

I recently replaced all my computers with Microsoft Vista (don’t ask why). Now my Linux boxes are really all remote and are all servers. From time to time I need to compile stuff and test some Linux software, so I installed Cygwin. Cygwin is a Linux environment which includes a shell environment and a full Linux look and feel.

I have used this many times on XP’s - however this was my first install on Vista. Trust me when I tell you Vista is not that compatible. For example Quickbooks pre 2007 definitely does not work.

Anyway the install went nicely and I was able to ssh into one of my servers. All with no problems at all. I have made a brief video which i will include in this post as soon as the ftp completes. Why is ftp (I am on Comcast), so much slower in the last week. I have heard Comcast are ‘doing stuff’ with file uploads and downloads. Irritating.

Cygwin can be found here.
