How the web could work, and sometimes tries…

What is the Internet? When you think about the web do you think about a web site, or online chat, or email, or forums or any of the above? I think a lot of people believe the Internet is a web site presence. They miss the point.

The Internet is a means of communicating, its a way to connect one computer to another - and by implications one person to another. Sounds simple, and thats the way it should work. But I would say over 90% of cases consist of a ‘presence’ in the form of a web site. Sadly, these web sites are often static and never change or move. Thats not the web.

The web is about conversations. Conversations embrace people, they keep people engaged, entertained and educated. So when designing your web strategies think conversation. How can I have an effective conversation with my visitor. How does this conversation change over time, how does it ebb and flow, how does it evolve? By the way these are not shouted conversations, where you stand atop a hill and shout down at your visitors everything and sundry you think they would like to hear. Rather its about understanding what your visitor wants to listen to, what they need, what they are looking for - and then providing it. If you are really good you will also anticipate what they want and almost provide, without the visitor actually asking.

Do you know of any web presence that offers this? I have a few cases in mind, and will describe them in later post - but I would love to hear from you. Clue - check your email box, are there any emails that you actually welcome, that you never really asked for, but which came at just the right moment, and triggered and action from you?
